Oc-Eo Art will be mounting the inaugural solo exhibition and sale of the work of Chinese artist He Hong Wei at Gallery 27, 27 Cork Street, London later this year (opening July 1st) and we have already committed to donating 10% of the proceeds to the China Earthquake Appeal.
We were also planning to exhibit 5 paintings from a series He made at the time of the Asian SARS epidemic. These were to be for exhibition only but, following this email, received from the artist's wife on Thursday, we will now be offering these for sale, at his request, in order to raise funds now. 100% of proceeds will be donated.
The email we received reads as follows:
"The solo exhibition is a good news for He and me, the upcoming olympics game is a great news to China, however, the sudden earthquake in China really brought us upset. Each time when we hear the news or see the pictures, we can not help tearing. So tragedy it is. He Hongwei had already participated a donation exhibition in Beijing to contribute his paintings for collecting money for the people living the adisaster area. I, also is contributing my salary to them.
However, this is not quite enough, after a discussion with He, we decided to entrust you to sell SARS for a donation to them, although we value the paintings very much, but as you know, He painted them when SARS attacked China in 2003, this time, we hope we could take some social responsibilities since it is too much a shock to us. All the SARS paintings income will be donated to them through Redcross association or other orginization. Please kindly help us to handle it in London."
Although these paintings document a different tragedy, they are a highly emotional and appropriate statement at this time too. He Hong Wei has won accolades for them in Beijing, and was not intending to sell them as they have such personal significance to him.
Please help us support this worthy cause by raising the profile of these important pieces of original fine art from China. This is not in any way a PR exercise, just a genuine plea for assistance. If you have contacts interested in Chinese art, please get in touch.

Thank you.

News update regarding 'Urgent sale from art to raise emergency funds for China's earthquake recovery', sent 15th May 2008
The Chinese artist He Hong Wei generously offered 5 paintings from his powerful and poignant series created at the time of the Asian SARS epidemic to raise emergency funds for the earthquake disaster in China. Peter Quintana's Gallery Oc-Eo Art has kindly hosted this initiative.
We are very pleased to confirm that works were purchased for the eclectic Azam Collection in London.
The SARS series was intended to be loaned to Oc-Eo Art for their forthcoming 'Hometown' exhibition opening July 1st, however the scale of this disaster and the suffering of those people affected prompted the artist into giving his work. He Hong Wei's paintings were an artistic and personal response to the SARS virus, yet these works also appropriately echo the distress felt in this current crisis following the earthquake. This series has won accolades in Beijing and his talent as a contemporary Chinese artist has been widely acknowledged. He Hong Wei paints passionately and with integrity producing striking and memorable works with bold painterly gestures.
This has been a genuine effort to raise funds for the appeal and 100% of the sale will be
donated to the cause. The plan is to contribute the money to a fund being raised by the
Songzhuang Artists Association (of which He Hong Wei is a member) to build a much-needed new school in the affected area.
Our sincere thanks go out to everyone who responded to this appeal and in particular the artist.
